Importance of Scrubs

We have all seen people with dry, cracked lips, hands, or feet?  These are signs that a scrub is desperately needed.  Scrubs will slowly and painlessly remove the buildup of dead skin to reveal smooth, soft skin.  Each scrub is designed for particular parts of the body because the thickness of skin varies from your face, body, and hands/feet.  Scrubs for the face are the gentles, body scrubs are more abrasive than face scrubs, but not as abrasive as scrubs for feet/hands. 

Scrubs are an important part of skincare regiment because by removing dead skin it helps provide a smooth, more even color, and softer skin.  Skin should be exfoliated 1 to 3 times a week, depending on the skin type and condition.  Moisturizer should be applied after a scrub to help protect the new skin from the toxins in the environment.

Did you know that your skin completely replaces itself about once every 30 days and makes up 15% of human body weight?  The sheading of human skin slowly happens, unless the skin is damaged by too much sun then it could peel off in strips. 

Skin is the largest organ in a human body.  Most people believe the only way to add a vitamins and minerals into a body is to eat them, but the mouth isn’t the only way for a body to absorb nutrition.  When you place lotions, oil, soaps to your skin, it is absorbed directly into your blood stream and heads for the organs.  Sounds like a great way to eat nasty tasting vegetables, huh?  Except, it works the same way as a negative too when skin comes in contact with harsh chemical from lotions, bath bombs, scrubs, people smoking, UV light, wind, viruses, etc.  Some face/body scrubs are harsh and strip the skin of natural oils and do not offer any nutrition to the skin, check the ingredients.  Stripping natural oil from the skin weakens the body’s immune system by removing the natural oils that act as a barrier against diseases.  The older we get the less natural oils the body produces, making skin care choices even more important.

How to Select a Scrub

Soap or Oil

First determine if the scrub is soap or oil based.  Soap base can be used every day and is great for oil or ache skin, but will dry out normal or skin that is already dry.  Soap base scrubs are easier, less messy, and can be used daily.  Soap scrubs usually only clean and exfoliate, but does not condition or moisturize the skin.  Oil based scrubs are more popular and mainly what people purchase. 

Oil based scrubs are more expensive, but are worth the cost.  These scrubs contain nutrition for your skin and contain ingredients like sugar, salt, butters, coconut, almond oil, and a host of additives that are exfoliates.

The two most common oil base scrubs are made with sugar or salt.  Sugar is best for sensitive or very dry skin and salt based scrubs are better for oily skin.  Salt has detoxifying properties, but may irritate sensitive skin. 


Exfoliates help obtain a deep cleanse, leaves skin refreshed, vibrant, and soft. .  Exfoliates add abrasive effect to help remove dead cells and toxins from skin.  This process should not be painful (do not scrub hard or for long periods of time in one place).  Dark spots, scars and stretchmarks will not disappear overnight and may never completely go away depending how deep in the skin the scar is located. 

Most common exfoliates for scrubs are:

  • Clays (Bentonite clay adds lather in soap and is a natural detoxifier), Kaolin, Red Moroccan, Rhassoul
  • Flowers – roses, lavender buds, eucalyptus, marigold, and calendula
  • Seeds – ground seed
  • Almonds ground
  • Tea - especially green tea
  • Coffee – encourages circulation, reduce appearance of cellulite by tightening the skin
  • Coconut flakes
  • Oatmeal – reduces inflammation and redness, reduces pours, and a good cleaner
  • Walnut shells ground
  • Sugar – moisturizers skin, helps retain moisture in deep skin
  • Salt – pulls dirt and grime from skin, helps keep skin firm, removes excess water from skin, tons of vitamins and minerals

Hint 1 - using a lip scrub once or twice a week will help your lipstick stay on longer, prevents cracking, and chapped lips. 

Hint 2 - who doesn’t like a deep golden tan, the day before you apply a tanning lotion/cream for an artificial tan or a day in the sun, exfoliating will keep that tanned glow longer.  The tan will last longer and be more even. 

How to Use a Scrub

When utilizing a scrub, make sure your skin is wet, massage a small amount using a circular upward motion (avoid eye area).  Do not press down hard or rub the skin in a back and forth motion, as it may aggravate the skin.  If the skin turns red, stop scrubbing.  Concentrate more on trouble areas such as, scars, stretch mark, and cellulite.  Take your time with the scrub to allow your skin time to absorb the nutrition in the ingredients.  Rinse well with warm water and follow with cold water to close the pores.  Pat skin dry and follow with organic moisturizer made with deep hydration (shea butter, sunflower, jojoba oil). 

Warnings for Utilizing Scrubs

Never use scrubs on sunburn skin, if you have a rash, or other skin condition as this will only create more damage to your already damaged skin.  Other warning to adhere are do not use a body scrub on your face.  Body scrubs are designed for tougher skin than the thin layer of skin on your face.  Also, don’t use on areas that have recently been shaved or wax as it may produce a burning sensation.
